TWO 20-YEAR-OLDS · ONE TEMPJOB · ONE BACK YARD
Reche Canyon, Southern California, end of 2010. Philipp Klakow had flown in from Germany at 20 to race AMA Supercross. Jared Hicks was already there — same age, same dream, same problem. Both qualified for night-show rounds, neither had the sponsorship money to keep going.
They took mornings off training to work as temps at one of the biggest US motocross graphics companies. Learned the business. Saw what the kits actually needed. Started Backyard out of a back yard in 2011 — that's where the name comes from.
PRO RIDER → KIT MAKER · WHAT THE KITS ACTUALLY NEEDED
Racing was Plan A. Graphics was the job that kept the bike on the truck. By 2013 it was clear which one was actually the career.
What they made was different. Vinyl that survived a season. Designs that fit the bike instead of being stretched to fit. Customers who got a say in their own kit. The big manufacturers didn't do any of that.

Every kit still designed in our studio. Every kit still made to order, one rider at a time. No batches. No stock kits. The same model that started in a back yard.

Custom-only model goes worldwide. Production scales out of Southern California. Backyard becomes a real business.
Ryan Villopoto joins as Brand Ambassador. The start of the rider-picked-us pattern that still runs through the roster today.
Tommy Searle wins the British MX2 championship on a Backyard kit — Triumph's first-ever British MX title as a manufacturer.
